October 31, 2011 the global population hit 7-billion people, a 40% increase in just 23 years. This unprecedented increase in humankind has forced an urgent focus on issues of poverty, diseases, climate change and the overall political climate.
How has the population grown?
In 33AD the worldwide population was estimated at 150 million to 330 million, roughly the population of the United States. It would take 1600 years for that number to double to 603 million.
Near 1820 is when the world hit 1 billion people, approximately the population of China today.
That number would double in 110 years, hitting 2.7 billion in 1930.
It would take barely 57 years for it to double again to 5 billion in 1987.
World population is again set to double in 73 years (2060) to 10 billion.
